I love the content Dave produces, from the interviews with Marketing and PR executives- giving those of us starting out some career advice, to the celebrity interviews and the current hottest trends in beauty. But what I love most about him, is the truly wonderful person he is. I have had the absolute pleasure of attending some of his well-known beauty events in Toronto, and have had the chance to chat with him on social media and in person on many occasions.
He is one of the kindest people I have ever met, especially in the PR/beauty industry. He is so generous, giving countless opportunities to bloggers and those starting out in the field, and he is so humble regarding his success. When you think of the beauty industry, it can be a little intimidating. There is a lot of pressure put on us by mass media and pop culture. However, I was absolutely impressed to see this is most definitely not always the case, and there are some extremely down-to-earth people who are sincere and generous within the industry, and Dave is one of those people.
I still remember attending my first event hosted by him, late last September (wow, almost a year ago already!) for Estee Lauder contour and skincare products. I was a bit nervous, but everyone there was so welcoming. Dave came over to me and introduced himself, and we chatted about PR, beauty products and blogging. Given my degree in PR and Communications, I have a passion for writing and social media, so getting to chat with him about all this was so exciting. Meeting Dave that day pushed me to come out of my shell and start my blog. He is so encouraging and gave me some great tips.
Now, almost a year later, I have attended 5 of his events and have been blogging ever since. We keep in touch via social media, and he is always open to answering questions about products or career advice. I attribute so many of the positive things that have happened with my blog to his generosity. Since meeting him and launching my blog, I have had many doors open thanks to the event invites he has given me. But most of all, he instilled that extra bit of confidence in me that I needed to start this journey, and for that I will always be so grateful.
I have also made some amazing friendships through Dave’s network. One I would like to mention is Cat Forsley. She is a beautiful woman inside and out, and has the most beautiful aura and kind energy. She is also a beauty blogger and creator and content producer of a beauty podcast on iTunes. She inspires me every day, and I am so grateful and lucky to have met her. You can find Cat on her blog www.mylipaddiction.com.
I attended Dave’s Cityline taping event in Toronto on Friday, September 2nd, just over a week ago. I asked Dave some questions regarding beauty, his role with Cityline as Beauty Expert and his career in general. I am so excited to share this interview with you. So keep reading to get to know Dave a little more!!
Interview: Dave Lackie
Chantal: With your role as Beauty Expert on Cityline, you have worked closely with the crew behind the scenes. What would you say sets Cityline apart from other daytime shows?
Dave: Cityline has always been about the information and the guest experts. They take the job very seriously, and work to really share their expertise and passion with viewers. There really is a family feeling at the show as we’ve known each other for so long. I used to hire Lynn Spence to produce fashion shows for me when I worked at Hudson’s Bay the first time round and she’d hire Lisa Rogers to model. I think that family feeling comes across on TV. We really do like each other.
Chantal: You are a big inspiration to a lot of us beauty bloggers and beauty enthusiasts. I personally really enjoy your interviews with those in the industry; especially when you discuss career advice. What advice do you have for those starting out in PR, Communications or Marketing like myself?
Dave: Always believe in yourself. And try to find ways in your current jobs to incorporate your love of beauty. So if you work for a company maybe you can plan a beauty fundraiser or event. I find joining professional organizations like CEW is great. And build your own social media platforms with really good content. When you blog, take the time to really research the brands and products you are writing about. That will set you apart from other bloggers and get the attention of the beauty brands.
Chantal: What is your favourite beauty quote?
Dave: “Beauty is on the inside.” – Natalie Portman
Chantal: What is your favourite beauty tip?
Dave: When you buy a new palette, book a beauty lesson at the counter. It may cost a little but you will learn so many ways to use your new product. The makeup artists will even give you face charts to show how to best wear it for you. I think that it is so important to get the very most from every single product you buy.
Chantal: What inspired you to start engaging with your followers and having these follower events? It is extremely generous of you to do this, and I don’t know of anyone else doing it.
Dave: I have been attending press events for more than a decade, and I thought it was such a shame that the people who most love beauty weren’t able to attend. It was only a select group of editors. So I decided to create these dinners and events for beauty enthusiasts on social media. So many people have become good friends through them. They are great fun.
Big thank you to Dave for doing this interview!! Thank you for ALL that you do. For inspiring so many of us, and giving us the best beauty and career advice, as well as for all of your generosity. It is rare to meet someone so genuine, and I feel so lucky to have met you! You truly bring happiness to a lot of people.
