Interview- Beauty Editor and Cityline Beauty Expert, Dave Lackie

If you are a beauty blogger or beauty enthusiast, chances are you know who Dave Lackie is.  If you don’t, Dave is editor-in-chief and founder of BEAUTY the guide digital magazine, CityTv’s Cityline Beauty Expert, men’s style columnist for the National Post newspaper, and the list goes on.

He is also very well-known for engaging daily with his social media followers, and for his amazing beauty product giveaways on such accounts (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) as well as his blog giveaways on www.davelackie.com.

I love the content Dave produces, from the interviews with Marketing and PR executives- giving those of us starting out some career advice, to the celebrity interviews and the current hottest trends in beauty.  But what I love most about him, is the truly wonderful person he is.  I have had the absolute pleasure of attending some of his well-known beauty events in Toronto, and have had the chance to chat with him on social media and in person on many occasions.

He is one of the kindest people I have ever met, especially in the PR/beauty industry.  He is so generous, giving countless opportunities to bloggers and those starting out in the field, and he is so humble regarding his success.   When you think of the beauty industry, it can be a little intimidating.  There is a lot of pressure put on us by mass media and pop culture.  However, I was absolutely impressed to see this is most definitely not always the case, and there are some extremely down-to-earth people who are sincere and generous within the industry, and Dave is one of those people.

I still remember attending my first event hosted by him, late last September (wow, almost a year ago already!) for Estee Lauder contour and skincare products.  I was a bit nervous, but everyone there was so welcoming.  Dave came over to me and introduced himself, and we chatted about PR, beauty products and blogging.  Given my degree in PR and Communications, I have a passion for writing and social media, so getting to chat with him about all this was so exciting.  Meeting Dave that day pushed me to come out of my shell and start my blog.  He is so encouraging and gave me some great tips.

Now, almost a year later, I have attended 5 of his events and have been blogging ever since.  We keep in touch via social media, and he is always open to answering questions about products or career advice.  I attribute so many of the positive things that have happened with my blog to his generosity.  Since meeting him and launching my blog, I have had many doors open thanks to the event invites he has given me.  But most of all, he instilled that extra bit of confidence in me that I needed to start this journey, and for that I will always be so grateful.

I have also made some amazing friendships through Dave’s network.  One I would like to mention is Cat Forsley.  She is a beautiful woman inside and out, and has the most beautiful aura and kind energy.  She is also a beauty blogger and creator and content producer of a beauty podcast on iTunes.  She inspires me every day, and I am so grateful and lucky to have met her.  You can find Cat on her blog www.mylipaddiction.com.

I attended Dave’s Cityline taping event in Toronto on Friday, September 2nd, just over a week ago.  I asked Dave some questions regarding beauty, his role with Cityline as Beauty Expert and his career in general.  I am so excited to share this interview with you.  So keep reading to get to know Dave a little more!!

Interview: Dave Lackie

Q. 1

Chantal: With your role as Beauty Expert on Cityline, you have worked closely with the crew behind the scenes.  What would you say sets Cityline apart from other daytime shows?

Dave: Cityline has always been about the information and the guest experts. They take the job very seriously, and work to really share their expertise and passion with viewers. There really is a family feeling at the show as we’ve known each other for so long. I used to hire Lynn Spence to produce fashion shows for me when I worked at Hudson’s Bay the first time round and she’d hire Lisa Rogers to model. I think that family feeling comes across on TV. We really do like each other.

Q. 2

Chantal: You are a big inspiration to a lot of us beauty bloggers and beauty enthusiasts. I personally really enjoy your interviews with those in the industry; especially when you discuss career advice. What advice do you have for those starting out in PR, Communications or Marketing like myself?

Dave: Always believe in yourself. And try to find ways in your current jobs to incorporate your love of beauty. So if you work for a company maybe you can plan a beauty fundraiser or event. I find joining professional organizations like CEW is great. And build your own social media platforms with really good content. When you blog, take the time to really research the brands and products you are writing about. That will set you apart from other bloggers and get the attention of the beauty brands.

Q. 3

Chantal: What is your favourite beauty quote?

Dave: “Beauty is on the inside.” – Natalie Portman

Q. 4

Chantal: What is your favourite beauty tip?

Dave: When you buy a new palette, book a beauty lesson at the counter. It may cost a little but you will learn so many ways to use your new product. The makeup artists will even give you face charts to show how to best wear it for you. I think that it is so important to get the very most from every single product you buy.

Q. 5

Chantal: What inspired you to start engaging with your followers and having these follower events? It is extremely generous of you to do this, and I don’t know of anyone else doing it.

Dave: I have been attending press events for more than a decade, and I thought it was such a shame that the people who most love beauty weren’t able to attend. It was only a select group of editors. So I decided to create these dinners and events for beauty enthusiasts on social media. So many people have become good friends through them. They are great fun.

Big thank you to Dave for doing this interview!!  Thank you for ALL that you do.  For inspiring so many of us,  and giving us the best beauty and career advice, as well as for all of your generosity.  It is rare to meet someone so genuine, and I feel so lucky to have met you!  You truly bring happiness to a lot of people.

Bella Aura- Skincare Review

HOLY GRAIL alert!  This is at the TOP of my must-have skincare list.  I love using skincare products that are natural and contain essential oils, so my skincare routine was originally filled with staple products that contain natural ingredients/benefits.  But Bella Aura is this and so much more.  I am absolutely SO impressed with the effectiveness of this line of skincare, and I cannot stress enough how I think everyone needs to hear about and try these products.

Proudly made in Canada, Bella Aura’s philosophy is to have you feeling your best, because beauty starts from the inside.  They believe “When you’re at your best, the positive spirit within you emanates from the surface of your skin, spreading illuminating energy into the world.  At Bella Aura, our mission is simple: to craft pristine natural skincare infused with groundbreaking technology so that your complexion radiates your pure inner glow.”*  This is so heart-warming to hear.  I love brands that believe in telling women to embrace their natural beauty, and that they are beautiful as they are.  I also love when they stress that feeling beautiful inside is where it all starts, this is what Bella Aura believes, as do I;  so naturally I am intrigued by this brand.

I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with founder and CEO, Yasmine Jones.  She is a genuinely kind woman and a very spiritual person.  Yasmine and I share a lot of the same views, we both believe in meditation and the power of positive thinking, and being happy with yourself as you are.  Sometimes companies can make you feel as though you need their products to “fix” or “mask” the “problems” you think you have.  I find this so sad, because I think it’s important to support brands like Bella Aura who encourage you to feel you are perfect as you are, and to be happy and secure with yourself and that this is beauty.

The Products:

Yasmine was kind enough to send me the entire line of skincare products to try out and review- 5 products total.

“Each of our products contains our exclusive Kamilah blend of four natural botanical extracts loaded with a spectrum of energizing vitamins, minerals and Omega 3,6,9 Fatty Acids.” *

  • Gentle Purifying Cleanser
  • Daily Moisture Repair Emulsion (moisturizer)
  • Antioxidant Booster Emulsion
  • Night Cellular Renewal Emulsion
  • Instant Lifting Eye Contour

Note- Emulsion: “Water based moisturizer with oil. It is lightweight and quickly absorbs into the deepest layers of your skin, leaving no greasy residue. An emulsion has the ability to maintain hydration levels and prevent moisture loss from your skin’s surface. It is beneficial for all skin types, including people with oily skin, as it is a water base and does not cause pore clogging.” *

Not only am I in love with Bella Aura’s philosophy, but I am so AMAZED at how well the products perform.  Here are some individual photos and descriptions of each:

Gentle Purifying Cleanser

Blue logo:  Symbolizes calmness. Blue projects tranquility and inner peace.

“Gently cleanses the skin without stripping its own moisture. Helps skin detox from visible effects that accumulate during the day, purifying and refinishing skin’s surface, reducing visible signs of aging. Replenishes skin with rich, nourishing moisture to keep it soft, smooth and comfortable. Supercharges skin with vitamins and re-strengthening minerals. A velvety smooth texture that doesn’t contain harsh soap.” *

Daily Moisture Repair Emulsion

Green logo: Communicated renewal. Green projects healing, rejuvenation and a sense of nature.

“Infuses skin with High Performance Peptides, rich Vitamins E-A-C-D-F-K-B complex, minerals, omega 3-6-9 fatty acids to nourish, hydrate, rejuvenate and replenish your skin. Provides better hydration properties than Glycerin or Hyaluronic Acid. Proven to reduce trans-epidermal water loss and dramatically improves skin hydration. Helps minimize the look of dullness and fine, dry lines through delivering refreshing hydration. Helps support the skin’s natural collagen and reveals a younger, more lifted look.” *

Antioxidant Booster Emulsion

Orange logo: Symbolizes a burst of energy and creativity. It projects a radiant glow.

“Infuses skin with High Performance Peptides, vitamins C-E-A-B complex-D-F-k, minerals, omega 3-6-9 fatty acids to nourish, protect, rejuvenate and re-balance your skin to provide a more radiant look. Helps the skin detox from visible effects that accumulate during the day by purifying and refinishing the skin’s surface, therefore reducing visible signs of aging. Helps reduce the look of dark spots, discoloration, blotchiness and redness. Helps support the skin’s natural collagen and reveals a younger look. It repairs and restores the skin’s natural barrier that prevents the damaging effects of free radicals.” *

Night Cellular Renewal Emulsion

Pink logo: Evokes compassion, beauty and love. It projects warmth and passion.

“Infuses skin with Peptides, rich vitamins E-C-A-K-F-D-B Complex, Omega 3-6-9 Fatty acids, Minerals and nutrients to replenish, renew, rejuvenate and re-balance your skin for a more radiant glow. Provides your skin with intense hydration and helps protect skin from environmental assaults. Helps support the skin’s natural collagen and reveal a younger, more lifted lookImproves skin hydration, firmness, elasticity to help retain a superior moisture barrier. Stimulate the rejuvenation process of mature skin and dramatically reduce the visible signs of aging.” *

Instant Lifting Eye Contour

Indigo logo: Represents our spirituality and intuition. Indigo projects a heightened sense of awareness.

“Infuses skin with rich vitamins K-E-C-A-F-D-B complex, minerals, omega 3-6-9 fatty acids and peptides to nourish, replenish, rejuvenate, and hydrate your skin for a more radiant look. Helps support the skin’s natural collagen and reveals a more lifted look. Helps the delicate skin around the eyes to instantly look brighter, smoother and more even-toned. Lifts, firms, hydrates and helps define the eye area for a younger, brighter look.” *

I have been using the entire line going on my third week.  The texture of the products are not thick, they are very light.  It spreads so easily on the skin and absorbs extremely well.  I was very impressed with the lightweight formula, and how clean and fresh my skin felt after using them all.  Within the first few days I noticed a difference in my skin.  My skin felt so soft and looked smoother.  Now after continued use it still feels soft, looks smooth and feels more “pure”.  This may sound strange haha, but to be honest my skin just feels overall cleaner deep down.  In addition to this, you know those stubborn blackheads you can never seem to get rid of?  Yes, gross I know!  Well Bella Aura skincare has significantly diminished the appearance of those on my skin, I am absolutely amazed.  No other product has EVER done this for me- ever.

My favourite product out of the 5 if I had to pick one, is the Instant Lifting Eye Contour- just WOW.  I noticed a difference after just one use.  My under eye area is brighter and although I am still young and do not have “wrinkles”, it has made the lines I do have much smoother, and my under eye concealer blends in like a dream now.  It works so well, I looked in the mirror in the morning after the first use and couldn’t get over it.

Interview

I also had the pleasure of interviewing Yasmine to ask her a few additional questions regarding her brand and her views:

Q.1  Chantal: What does Bella Aura mean?

Yasmine: It means a beautiful aura. Your own reflective image that represents both inner and outer beauty, the deep glow from within that illuminates your complexion.

Q. 2  Chantal: What is your number one tip for feeling beautiful inside and out?

Yasmine: Beauty is about living your life and being happy with yourself inside and out. Being happy that doesn’t mean that everything is perfect, it means that you’ve decided to look beyond the imperfections. You create your beauty with your attitude, behavior and actions.

Q. 3  Chantal: If you could use one word to describe Bella Aura Skincare what would it be?

Yasmine: Complete.

Q. 4  Chantal: What is one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

Yasmine: Happiness is when you feel good about yourself without feeling the need for anyone else’s approval. You live life on your own term instead of buckling to society’s pressures. Surround yourself with positive, spiritual and loving people that bring you joy and success in all areas of your life. Be grateful for what you already have and you will attract more good things. Gratitude is a powerful process for shifting your energy and bringing more of what you want in life. Love yourself for who you are.

I encourage you to read Yasmine’s story here.  It is truly touching and explains how Bella Aura came about.

I give Bella Aura skincare a 10 out of 10.  I am blown away by the company philosophy, research, formula and performance/effectiveness of the products.  Trust me, you NEED to try this, you will not regret it.  In addition to the fact that this skincare line produces results, you would also be supporting a brand that is proudly Canadian, and that has a founder that is truly an inspirational and beautiful person inside and out.

These girls are absolutely so sweet.  I am so thankful to have met them all thanks to Dave Lackie and beauty blogging.  From left to right: Christine, myself, Nicci and Cat.

This taping was on a Friday so we got to see a Fashion Friday segment live with Lynn Spence!!! Here are a few photos of some of my favourite outfits shown:

We also had the treat of seeing Dave’s beauty and fragrance segments!  He and Tracy Moore the host of the show are soo funny together!

IMG_5282

The amount of work the crew puts in is unbelievable.  When you watch the show you really don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, and the amount of team work and dedication it takes to make everything happen.  Absolutely phenomenal people, they were all very sweet and great at explaining how things work.

I also got to see the control/production room, this was so cool!

This is where the director calls the shots, and the videos and content used in the show gets uploaded (to name a few).  Lots of team work happening in this room!

After the show I went down to take some photos of the set up close.  It is so lovely, I love the vibe they have going on.  So pretty, fresh and modern.

I also had my photo taken with Lynn Spence and Candy Signorini, they were both SO funny and great to chat with:

Thank you SO MUCH to Dave and everyone at Cityline for having us.  You treated us to an amazing experience, and showed us a side of broadcast that not many people get to see unless they work in the industry.  The crew really is like a family there, and it is inspiring to see a group of individuals come together, work hard and produce something so many people love like Cityline.

Here is a photo of the extremely generous gift bag we received.  Will be doing some individual posts on some of these products:

I also did a short question interview with Dave on his role with Cityline, and the beauty industry in general.  I wanted to include it in this post, but it would be too long, and I also really think it deserves its own feature/post.  I will instead include it as a separate piece, so stay tuned on my blog this week for that- you won’t want to miss this!  Those of you that already know Dave as well know how kind he is, and I am so grateful he took the time to answer some questions I asked him, and that I can share this with all of you.  I cannot wait for you to see that post this week!

The taping we attended will be airing on Friday, September 9th on CityTV.  If you missed the fun, you can see it all under the hashtag #citylinebeauty.

Bobbi Brown- Illuminate Pencil and Bronzer Review

Bobbi Brown has been my favourite makeup brand for the longest time.  Not only because the products are phenomenal, but because Bobbi herself is such an inspiration.  She seems so genuinely kind, and her company philosophies are touching.  I love when a brand not only has great products, but they have a mission and vision that encourages women to embrace their natural beauty, and makes them feel beautiful in their own unique way.

Many of my holy-grail makeup products are by Bobbi Brown.  Today I will share two of my favourites, but if you love Bobbi Brown, or you are curious about her products, stay tuned on my blog because there will be more to come!

With the recent “strobing” trend, I figured doing a post on a highlighter is in order.  I will also post about my all time favourite bronzer, of course by Bobbi Brown.

Highlighter

Retouching Face Pencil- Shade: Illuminate 1

I have a few compact/powder highlighters, but what I love about Bobbi Browns’ is how easy it is to use in this pencil form, how precise it allows the application to be, and of course the effect.

IMG_5202

How gorgeous is this?? It also comes with a sharpener- love it!

I love the finish this highlighter gives.  The colour is a peach/cream shade, but it is more focused on the shimmer.  Out of all the highlighters I have used, this one works best, and I think it’s also because the pencil allows for a precise application.  Therefore, you can concentrate it exactly where you want it.  It sparkles so beautifully in the light.  I love using it on my cheekbones, tear-duct and cupids bow.  I don’t do nose contouring, but I imagine the pencil would allow you to make a nice straight line application for your highlight.

Here is a closer look:

I think this pencil idea is great.  I can easily pop this in my purse and I don’t need to bring brushes or anything in addition to this around with me.  Yes, you can easily pack a compact powder highlighter, but the problem is if you don’t pack a brush you have to use your fingers to apply it, and if you’re like me there’s no WAY i’m using my fingers on the compact unless I have just washed my hands, which isn’t always an option when you are out and about.  The pencil form is great, pop the cap off, apply and you’re good to go!  I purchased this at Sephora for C$37.00, you can view it here.

Bronzer

Bronzing Powder- Shade: Natural 1

I can’t tell you enough how much I love the finish of this bronzer.  It goes on so easily, and doesn’t create harsh lines- it is super blendable.  It really gives off the effect of a real tan, because the colour payoff is very rich in brown and red.  I have even used this on my cheeks as a blush, because of the red tones in it, it dupes as a blush as well.  I am in LOVE with this, it is my #1 bronzer in my collection.  This bronzer also has no scent to it, so if you aren’t a scent fan you will love this.   I know there are other brands that have made their bronzers smell like chocolate or other things, and some people really don’t like that- so you are safe with this Bobbi Brown bronzer.

This has a matte finish, but it does not go on chalky at all; it is very soft.  I would compare the effect it gives to that of a cream product.  I purchased this at Sephora for C$49.00, you can view it here.

Bobbi Brown products are phenomenal, and I highly suggest you give any of her products a try.  I have never been disappointed.  As I mentioned above, if you like supporting brands with a great mission and vision, and that value women in their natural beauty state- Bobbi Brown is all of this and more.  I will leave you with one of my favourite quotes by her:

The secret to beauty is simple: be who you are. – Bobbi Brown

Shiseido- Ibuki Quick Fix Mist Review

HOLY GRAIL product alert!

My last blog post was on the Saje Wellness mists, so I think it’s safe to say I have decided to venture into the world of mists (as I had not really done this previously) and I have to say I have definitely been missing out up until now.  I have another favourite mist, the Ibuki Quick Fix Mist by Shiseido.  This is one of my favourite products of all time.  If you have an oily t-zone like me, or just an oily complexion in general, you will LOVE this.

When I am working Monday-Friday all day, my skin gets oily fast, especially because I have had my makeup on since 7 a.m. and I have been running around all day.  Who wants to show up with oily skin to an important event, meeting with a client or even just around the office? NOT ME.  I have tried many different things to help with the oily t-zone problem, but nothing really seemed to work all that well.  The best solution I had found up until this Shiseido product, are the oil blotting films from Sephora.  Now that I use the Ibuki Quick Fix Mist, I don’t know what I would do without it.  I was lucky to receive this product from the Dave Lackie Shiseido event a little over a month ago, but I will be purchasing this again and again.

The Quick Fix Mist retails for C$25.00-C$32.00 (depending on where you purchase it from) and comes packaged in a bottle with a rounded side and one side that is completely flat.  Packaging wise, this makes for a great fit in your purse, laptop bag, coat or even your pocket.  The flat side makes it easy to slide in anywhere and take it with you when you are on the go.  At the event we were told the flat side was also designed with cell phones in mind.  This means it hugs your phone making transportation easy.

Now let’s get down to the product itself.  The smell is wonderful!!  I am a huge lavender fan and to me the scent reminds me of this, but it is not overpowering, and it does not linger on your skin after you spray it.  The scent is also very uplifting.

The consistency of the product is a gel inside of the packaging, but it comes out as a mist when you spray it.  It is very refreshing on the skin, especially when you spray it on throughout the day, it makes me feel as though I am starting over with a fresh face from 7 a.m. that morning.  It is designed to help correct shine and dehydration by revealing smoother, moisturized and fresher-looking skin over time as you use it.  Here is a short clip I made where you can see how light the mist is when sprayed:

The Ibuki Quick Fix Mist can be sprayed over makeup.  I close my eyes and spray it on in the morning after I apply my makeup, and it helps to keep my t-zone looking fresh as this is where my skin gets most oily.  On a side note, I do not wear foundation so I am not sure how it does with that, but I do wear blush, bronzer and eye makeup, and the product has helped to keep my makeup looking fresh throughout the day and really minimizes the creasing effect.

This is an essential I pack in my bag every morning before I head out.  I usually spray it 3 times a day depending on what I am doing.  Once in the morning after makeup application, lunch time and in the evening if I have a meeting, event or outing to go to.  When I spray it, I use 3 pumps, for the centre, left and right side of my face, this is how they demonstrated the product at Dave Lackie’s event, and I find it is the most effective way of doing it.  There is no mess, no residue and it dries very quickly once you spray it.  The Ibuki Quick Fix Mist in conjunction with my Sephora blotting films have made my skin a lot less oily, and they have become part of my daily routine and I am so pleased with the results!

Saje- Spray Mist Reviews

Following in the footsteps of my last post, I have 2 more Saje products that I am absolutely loving.

I can’t get enough of the Saje Namaste and Yoga mists.  My favourite thing is that they are mists for opposite purposes.

Namaste is an uplifting mist.  It comes in a 50ml glass bottle and it retails for C$9.95.  You spray it over your face while inhaling and it elevates your mood.

Some of my favourite ingredients found in this are lavender and orange essential oil.  Some other ingredients include patchouli, rose otto and champa.  I like to use this mist as part of my daily routine in the morning after my shower.

Yoga is a calming mist.  It comes in a 100ml glass bottle and it retails for C$19.95.  You spray this over your face, neck and chest while inhaling and it has a grounding effect.

Some of my favourite ingredients found in this are orange and cedarwood essential oil. Other ingredients include patchouli, rosewood, cardamon, champa and bergamot.  Yoga is meant to be used after a yoga session.  Seeing as these essential oils put you in a calmed state, I like to use this mist as part of my daily routine before or after yoga and meditation.  I also like to use it before I go to sleep, it really helps to achieve a peaceful bliss, which makes it great to use before bed.

So if you are in the market for something natural or you love essential oils, I highly recommend both of these mists.  They both smell so wonderful, and make a quick and easy, as well as effective addition to your daily rituals.

I would also like to say a big THANK YOU to Marilou Moles (www.twentyyork.com) or @20YS on Twitter, for giving me some Saje coupons for 50% off a product, to use at the new Westboro location in Ottawa.  If you are in the Ottawa area I suggest popping in there.  The staff were great and the location of the store makes it very home like.  Because it is a stand-alone store and not in a shopping mall it makes the experience a lot different.  This is my favourite Saje location!

Shiseido- Share Beauty Event

Love, beauty, relationships and connections.  A few words that come to mind to describe the new Shiseido Share Beauty (#sharebeauty) campaign.  I was lucky enough to be chosen by Dave Lackie to attend this event, which focused on the new campaign launch.

Dave Lackie, Editor of BEAUTY the guide and Elaine Shigeishi, General Manager for Shiseido, hosted this event for 30 of Dave’s Twitter followers.  Shiseido is a beautiful brand inside and out.  This same beauty the company possesses, shines through in this new campaign.  Share Beauty was created to remind us that beauty starts from within.

Dior- Addict Lip Reviews

Dior Addict is AMAZING, plain and simple.  I LOVE Dior’s lip products, as you may know from my recent review of the Dior Lip Maximizer.  If you haven’t seen it you can read it here,  In my recent post on the Cityline taping I was lucky enough to get to attend for Dave Lackie’s Twitter Followers, the gift bag I mentioned included a Dior Lip Addict Ultra-Gloss.  This review will focus on the Ultra-Gloss as well as two products I recently purchased from the Lip Glow range.
