Maison Jacynthe- Eyeshadow and Lipstick Review

Looking for a new eyeshadow or lipstick? Maison Jacynthe is the answer!  If you know me, you know I am all about eyeshadow.  I wear it every time I do my makeup, and I’m always looking for new colours to pair together and different finishes.  Maison Jacynthe sent me two eyeshadows and a lipstick to review, and I have found 3 new pieces to add to my “staples” collection.

Maison Jacynthe is a Canadian brand, products are made in Québec- YAY!  I love this quote from their brochure “Our 100% natural and active products are real food for the skin.”  You can use their products with confidence, knowing you are treating your skin to natural ingredients, not chemicals.

What you WON’T find in Maison Jacynthe products:

  • No petroleum byproducts
  • No artificial fragrances
  • No artificial preservatives

Maison Jacynthe’s active ingredients and fragrances come from plants and flowers.  I absolutely love this!

Here are some shots of the individual products I received:

Eyeshadow- 02 Crema:

Here is a closer look:

Crema is a beautiful shade.  I would say it is a bit of a cross between a frost and a lustre finish.  I use it as a highlight on the inner corner of the eyes, brow bone, or the entire mobile lid.  It is very rare for me to use a frost or lustre finish eyeshadow on my mobile lid, I love matte shades.  I usually only use the frost or lustre as a highlight shade on the eye.

Due to the fact that I have hooded lids, putting a finish like this all over the mobile lid or crease, usually ends up resulting in my eyes looking even more hooded.  When you apply these finishes to a hooded eye it captures the light (which brings things forward) and emphasizes the hood on the eye, making it look more severe than it actually is.  However, with this Maison Jacynthe eyeshadow I do not have this problem.  I actually love it all over the mobile lid, it is soft enough to not make the hooded lid stand out.  So to all my fellow hooded-eye beauties who are looking to add some sparkle to their collection- this is a must  if you normally tend to stay away from frost or lustre finishes for the same reasons I do- you will love this one!!

Eyeshadow- 09 Affogato:

Here is a closer look:

Affogato is AMAZING.  I can remember when I was 18 and going to prom, my Mom did my makeup for me.  She used this gorgeous purple/grey Revlon shade on my eyes and I was absolutely in love with it.  When I went to repurchase it after I ran out of it, I was disappointed to discover they discontinued the shade.  Affogato is almost exactly the same shade as that Revlon eyeshadow I was so sad to not be able to repurchase.  Maison Jacynthe’s shade is a gorgeous charcoal grey with a slight purple undertone.  If you have hazel eyes like me, or green eyes, it really makes them pop.  I love to use this shade in the crease.

I love to pair both these eyeshadows together.  Using Crema on my mobile lid, Affogato in the crease, and a bit of black eyeshadow on the outter V and lashline, and finish with some black mascara.  Both eyeshadows retail for C$22.00 each.

Moving on to lips, Maison Jacynthe also sent me this gorgeous lipstick.

Lipstick- 08 Corail Transparent Mate:

Corail Transparent Mate is so pretty.  It is matte, and goes on very easily- a little goes a long way.  I really like it because it is a beautiful coral shade, however, it is almost a cross between coral and red, and so it pairs well with a lot of different eyeshadow colour looks.  This lipstick goes on matte, but my favourite thing about it is that it is NOT drying.  Often times matte lipsticks can leave your lips feeling dry, but Maison Jacynthe’s almost has a creamy texture to it, so it’s easy to work with.  I also love the packaging of this product, how cute!!  It retails for C$33.00.

Tip: When using a matte lipstick such as this one, I suggest making sure you exfoliate your lips before application.  The only downfall to matte lipstick shades in my opinion is it really emphasizes dead skin if your lips are chapped.  I use a lip exfoliator before applying this and it goes on really well.

Overall Maison Jacynthe has a phenomenal makeup line.  I am so impressed at how pigmented the eyeshadows and lipstick are, a little of these products go a long way.  For a brand that has no chemicals and is made with natural ingredients, the makeup measures up to other high-end brands products that I use.  If you are looking for a birthday gift for someone, or still doing your holiday shopping, I strongly suggest checking out Maison Jacynthe!

Here are some swatches of all 3 products:

Estée Lauder- New Dimension Shape + Sculpt Face Kit

Today we are talking Estée Lauder.  One of my favourite brands.  This post will focus on their New Dimension Shape + Sculpt Face Kit, a must-have if you like contouring, whether it be a natural look, or a more intense look- this duo has got you covered!

Estée Lauder is an iconic brand.  What I think sets them apart from some other high-end brands, is that they have a triple threat effect.  By this I mean they have great products in all aspects of beauty.  They have amazing makeup, skincare and fragrances.  Most brands are often known for excelling in 1 of those categories, but Estée Lauder rocks it in all 3.

Last September, I was very lucky and got invited to an Estée Lauder event hosted by Dave Lackie in Toronto.  This was one of the products featured, and we learned how to contour from a pro Estée Lauder makeup artist.  I have been loving this New Dimension line ever since.

The New Dimension Shape + Sculpt Face Kit is designed to “Perfect your profile from every angle.”  This duo comes with a highlighting shade and a contouring shade.  You can lift and define using these products together.  Both shades are matte and they are in cream form.  They are suitable for a range of skintones as well, which I find pretty cool!  So if you are nervous to try out contouring because you don’t know what shade to get, a duo like this is perfect for you.

Personally, I am one who really likes the “natural look”.  But what is great about this duo is how the product is buildable.  So whether you wish to achieve a daytime look, or a more dramatic look for a night out, you have this option.  You can intensify the contour you create by applying additional product, it is very buildable and easy to blend.

Note: The sponge applicator that comes with the duo has product on it from me using this.

The highlight shade is on the left and the contour shade is on the right.  If you desire a natural look they suggest applying this before foundation.  If you desire a dramatic look, then apply this after your foundation, preferably liquid or creme foundation.  I actually do not wear foundation at all, and I can tell you this product works beautifully without foundation as well.  Because it is a cream, it is so smooth and once applied to the skin it warms up, making it blend so easily and look super natural.  This duo really gives your face more structure and symmetry.

Here is a closer look at both.  I apologize for the obvious sponge marks in the product photos, but I have been using it a lot.

Highlight shade:

Contouring shade:

Another thing I know you will all love is how you don’t need a lot of product to get results.  This means a little goes a long way, and your duo will last longer.  Yay!

The duo also comes with a small booklet to show you exactly where to apply both shades.

You can purchase this kit from an Estée Lauder counter or from Sephora for C$55.00.  If you need or would like additional guidance on how to use the duo, you can visit Estée Lauder’s website here and scroll to the bottom of the page for step-by-step instructions including a video.

Do you love anything from the New Dimension line?  Leave me a comment or a tweet, would love to chat about it!

Kismet Essentials- Coco Rinse Review

A few weeks ago, I posted on my social media accounts that I was sent Kismet Essentials’ product “Coco Rinse” and to watch for a review soon.  A lot of you were intrigued by this product and the oil pulling method.  First off, I would like to thank Kismet Essentials for sending me their product, I am so delighted!

Before I get into the review, here is a quick bio on Kismet Essentials.  They are a company based in Vancouver, BC (Yay for a Canadian brand) and they pride themselves on trying their best to use natural based products in their own lives, so they wanted to bring those kind of  products to their customers.  Their goal is to provide customers with products that will help them enjoy a naturally healthy and beautiful life.  All of their ingredients are organic, non-GMO, and ethically sourced from sustainable resources.  They are proud to provide products that make their customers feel good about what they bring into their home and put in their bodies.  Their products are good for you and our planet!

To be honest, the oil pulling method was something I had not tried, because I wasn’t really sure what it was all about, or how it could give you whiter teeth.  So like most people, I stuck to whitening strips.  Those of you who follow my blog know I love to use products like Coco Rinse that contain natural ingredients that benefit your body, skin and overall health.  I strongly believe in feeling beautiful inside as well as out, and Kismet Essentials believes in that philosophy too.  After doing some research on the oil pulling method, and Coco Rinse specifically, I was super excited to test this out.

In case you don’t know what the oil pulling method is, here is a description from their website: “Oil pulling is our favorite natural way to get whiter teeth and fresh breath! If you’ve never heard of it, oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic dental practice, also known as “kavala” or “gundusha”. It involves swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil daily in your mouth for 10-20 minutes to draw and pull our the toxins in your body.”

For additional information, check out this article on oil pulling by Helen Sanders at Health Ambition.  This article gives you detailed information on what oil pulling is, the different types of oils that can be used and the benefits of using this method.  Click here to read!

Kismet Essentials also lists some benefits of oil pulling on their website:

  • Whiter Teeth
  • Fresher Breath
  • Improved Digestion
  • Reduced Headaches
  • Cleaner Tongue and Mouth
  • Better Immune System
  • Healthier Gums
  • Reduced Plaque
  • Clearer, Softer Skin
  • Improved Skin Conditions (Eczema, Psoriasis etc)
  • Balanced Hormones

The Coco Rinse process is done over a 14 day period.  One of the things I love most is how easy it is to use.  You get 14 sachets in your kit, and you use 1 per day.  Open the sachet and put the product in your mouth, then swish it around for 10 minutes (or up to 20).  Yes- it’s seriously that easy.

Another thing I found awesome is how there is no mess.  When I have used whitening strips in the past, I would get it on my fingers and lips.  Because you have to peel the strips off and place them on your teeth, but none of this happens when using this product.  Coco Rinse is also mint flavoured, so it tastes good!  It’s basically like using mouthwash, you swish it around and there is no mess.

After the 10 minutes are up, you simply spit it out.  Do not swallow it, because it contains all of the toxins it has drawn out, so make sure to spit it out!  Another thing I love is how it does not leave that grimy feeling of film residue on your teeth; my teeth actually feel cleaner after I use this product.  I am SO impressed.

Click here for a quick how-to video.

If you have used whitening strips before, you have probably experienced the sensitivity and discomfort that comes along with using these.  Coco Rinse gave me zero pain or sensitivity over the entire 14 day duration, including now that I am done using the kit.

After my 14 days of continued use I can see that my teeth are whiter.  I am one to really take care of my teeth, I brush twice a day and floss once a day.  When I was younger I had braces, so I now have a small wire on the back of some of my teeth to keep them straight.  If you’ve had braces and now have these wires as well you know how annoying it is to floss with these.  I do my best, but it is the only spot where I will get plaque buildup because it’s so hard to floss around the wires.  Since using Coco Rinse I notice a BIG difference with my wires.  Using this in conjunction with my flossing has removed basically ANY buildup I had accumulated since my last teeth cleaning, I cannot get over it!!

Overall I am really happy with the results!  This product is a dream if you are someone like me who is obsessed with brushing and flossing haha and also because it is natural, whitens teeth and helps to keep plaque away which = cleaner smile = makes me super happy!  You can purchase Coco Rinse here for C$29.99, or a monthly subscription for C$25.99.  Shipping is $10.00 worldwide or FREE on orders above $50.00.  Also if you click here and sign up using your e-mail address you can get 15% off your first purchase!

Side note: Kismet Essentials also has an AWESOME blog on their website.  You can find lots of posts regarding coconut oil and its many benefits.  There is a post on how to get longer eyelashes using coconut oil, just saying 😉 so yeah I will be trying this!!!  You can view their blog by clicking here.  If you have tried Coco Rinse, or you will be, leave me a comment below!

Bobbi Brown- Illuminate Pencil and Bronzer Review

Bobbi Brown has been my favourite makeup brand for the longest time.  Not only because the products are phenomenal, but because Bobbi herself is such an inspiration.  She seems so genuinely kind, and her company philosophies are touching.  I love when a brand not only has great products, but they have a mission and vision that encourages women to embrace their natural beauty, and makes them feel beautiful in their own unique way.

Many of my holy-grail makeup products are by Bobbi Brown.  Today I will share two of my favourites, but if you love Bobbi Brown, or you are curious about her products, stay tuned on my blog because there will be more to come!

With the recent “strobing” trend, I figured doing a post on a highlighter is in order.  I will also post about my all time favourite bronzer, of course by Bobbi Brown.

Highlighter

Retouching Face Pencil- Shade: Illuminate 1

I have a few compact/powder highlighters, but what I love about Bobbi Browns’ is how easy it is to use in this pencil form, how precise it allows the application to be, and of course the effect.

IMG_5202

How gorgeous is this?? It also comes with a sharpener- love it!

I love the finish this highlighter gives.  The colour is a peach/cream shade, but it is more focused on the shimmer.  Out of all the highlighters I have used, this one works best, and I think it’s also because the pencil allows for a precise application.  Therefore, you can concentrate it exactly where you want it.  It sparkles so beautifully in the light.  I love using it on my cheekbones, tear-duct and cupids bow.  I don’t do nose contouring, but I imagine the pencil would allow you to make a nice straight line application for your highlight.

Here is a closer look:

I think this pencil idea is great.  I can easily pop this in my purse and I don’t need to bring brushes or anything in addition to this around with me.  Yes, you can easily pack a compact powder highlighter, but the problem is if you don’t pack a brush you have to use your fingers to apply it, and if you’re like me there’s no WAY i’m using my fingers on the compact unless I have just washed my hands, which isn’t always an option when you are out and about.  The pencil form is great, pop the cap off, apply and you’re good to go!  I purchased this at Sephora for C$37.00, you can view it here.

Bronzer

Bronzing Powder- Shade: Natural 1

I can’t tell you enough how much I love the finish of this bronzer.  It goes on so easily, and doesn’t create harsh lines- it is super blendable.  It really gives off the effect of a real tan, because the colour payoff is very rich in brown and red.  I have even used this on my cheeks as a blush, because of the red tones in it, it dupes as a blush as well.  I am in LOVE with this, it is my #1 bronzer in my collection.  This bronzer also has no scent to it, so if you aren’t a scent fan you will love this.   I know there are other brands that have made their bronzers smell like chocolate or other things, and some people really don’t like that- so you are safe with this Bobbi Brown bronzer.

This has a matte finish, but it does not go on chalky at all; it is very soft.  I would compare the effect it gives to that of a cream product.  I purchased this at Sephora for C$49.00, you can view it here.

Bobbi Brown products are phenomenal, and I highly suggest you give any of her products a try.  I have never been disappointed.  As I mentioned above, if you like supporting brands with a great mission and vision, and that value women in their natural beauty state- Bobbi Brown is all of this and more.  I will leave you with one of my favourite quotes by her:

The secret to beauty is simple: be who you are. – Bobbi Brown

Coppertone- ClearlySheer Sunscreen Review

Hi my lovelies- I am back!! Sorry for being away for a little bit, but I was on vacation in New York City for the last week.  I am happy to be back as I have some great beauty finds to share with you!

I’m so excited to be writing this post.  I have been loving this product for the last week when I was away in NYC.  I would like to thank Coppertone for sending me the ClearlySheer sunscreen lotion, and to note this is a collaboration through the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network (CBB).

I had such a great time in NYC last week, but with the heat and walking around comes the inevitable question: will I get a sunburn?  I decided this was the perfect time to test out this new product, and I am certainly glad I did.  Just to give you a bit more info about my skin type, I am more on the olive tone side, and naturally my skin does not burn easily; I usually tan when I have been in the sun.  But when you are walking around all week outside like I was, I figured sunscreen should be on my check-list, because burning would be a possibility.

The ClearlySheer line includes a lotion for body and face, and a spray for body.  All three are water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, have an SPF 30 with broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection and are moisturizing.  One thing I love about this product is that Coppertone said it was designed with “her” specific needs in mind.  I was also told it delivers broad spectrum protection in a delightfully light, refreshing formula that barely leaves a trace on the skin.  This is certainly true!!  One of my favourite things about the ClearlySheer was how it didn’t make me feel like I had “coated” my skin with something like other sunscreens can do.  It absorbs very quickly and there is no residue on your skin, my skin feels moisturized yet dry to the touch again once it has absorbed.

One of the complaints you hear most often with sunscreen is that it can clog pores and cause breakouts.  ClearlySheer did not do this at all for me!!  I used this on my body every day last week, and I did not experience any clogged pores or breakouts.  Therefore, I would say if you have acne-prone skin, or sensitive skin this is a wonderful product for you to use!

Pictured here you can see how light the texture of the product is:

IMG_4960

The scent is fresh and clean.  It is very soft so you do not get that overpowering sunscreen scent other brands can produce.  I LOVE the scent, but also love how light the formula is- it’s absolutely fantastic.

ClearlySheer gets a 10 out of 10 from me!  I did not get a sunburn and it truly delivers all that is promised! It is available at mass drug and grocery retailers across Canada.  Suggested retail price is $9.99 for the ClearlySheer lotion and spray for body, and $8.49 for the face lotion.  I am planning a few more outdoor activities before the summer is over so my next purchase will be the ClearlySheer face lotion!  If you want to save your skin for the rest of the summer without having to avoid the sun, I highly recommend you try one of the sunscreens from the ClearlySheer line!

Batiste- Original Dry Shampoo Review

Wish you could get ready faster in the morning and get some extra sleep?  Well my friends, Batiste dry shampoo can help.

I would like to thank Batiste for sending me this product to review.  This is a collaboration through the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network.

If you feel rushed in the morning when getting ready for work, or you just want to sleep in a little longer, let me tell you that dry shampoo will be your new best-friend if you have not yet discovered this gem.  I have been using dry shampoo for about 2 years now and it saves me so much time.  The only tricky thing is finding a brand that works with your hair type.  Different brands work better for different people i’m sure, so this post will share my personal experiences and preferences.

I have been using Batiste dry shampoo for about 6 months now, and I am in love with the Tropical blend which has coconut Mmmm.  I purchased this one because coconut is one of my favourite scents, but also because I could never seem to get my hands on a bottle of the Original Clean & Classic, the shelf was always empty!  However, recently I was fortunate enough to get a bottle, and now Batiste has sent me a bottle as well, AMEN! Haha.  The Original Clean & Classic has a very light fresh scent, it really helps to give that “clean feel” to your hair, as if you just washed it.

Dry shampoo is wonderful because it allows you to get away with 1 or 2 day old hair (depending on your hair type) by spraying this into your roots (and rest of your hair if you want) to absorb the excess oil.  Personally I wash my hair every second day, so I wash it one day then use dry shampoo the next, but that is my preference.  I have friends with thicker hair who can go a few days longer than that, just by using dry shampoo.  Batiste is by far one of my favourite dry shampoo brands.  When I use dry shampoo I always do an up-do.  It helps to add body to my fine hair and makes my roots look thicker.  One of the downfalls of most dry shampoo’s however,  is if you spray too close to your hair you end up with a white film, which you can brush out, but what I love about Batiste is it is EASY to brush out if you do accidentally spray to close (Batiste suggests holding the can 30cm from your hair to avoid this.)

I have tried 4 other dry shampoo brands, and although I will not name specific brand names, I developed a cough from using one of them.  I even tried stepping outside to spray it in my hair and still no luck- it was too strong, but I have NOT had this problem with Batiste at all, I can in fact spray it on my hair indoors and stay in the same room.

I highly recommend you give this a try!  Batiste dry shampoo retails for C$8.76.  It saves you time and it adds body to your hair, so if you have fine hair like me you will fall in love with this product.  Tip: Because this dry shampoo is so popular I suggest grabbing a few cans at a time when you purchase it in store!
