Urban Decay- Eyeshadow Primer Potion “Original” Review

If you have oily skin and/or eyelids, or like some extra pop/pigment to your eyeshadow shades, this is an absolute must in your makeup collection!

I’m sure many of you are already using an eyeshadow primer and perhaps even this one.  I wear eyeshadow every single day, so finding a primer that works well for me all day long is always at the top of my list.  I have tried so many different ones I have lost count.  I may also share my experience on other primers soon on my blog as others work well, but in the end this one is my absolute favourite and go-to when doing my eyseshadow.

The Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion retails for C$26.00 online on Sephora’s website, you can view it here.  Today, I am reviewing the Original shade.  Urban Decay has 3 other eyeshadow primers available in the range and they are called Anti-Aging, Eden and Minor Sin.

The Primer Potion in Original is a nude shade.  I absolutely love it, it doesn’t add too much colour.  The way I would describe it, is that it basically just cancels out any veins or discolouration of the eyelid, leaving you with a perfect canvas to work with.

If you’re like me and you get oily skin throughout the day (no shame my friends, as we get older this means our skin will wrinkle less 😉 Woo!) then you need something to keep your eyeshadow in place.  As I mentioned above, I also love to use eyeshadow primer not only because it prevents creasing throughout the day, but it also gives your eyeshadow more intensity in terms of the pigment.

For the application of the product it is very simple.  Apply it to your eyelid (a little goes a REALLY long way) and either blend it in with a brush or your finger.  I prefer to blend it in with my finger as the warmth makes for a flawless finish.  The warmth from your finger  helps to make sure the product doesn’t settle into “fine lines” as much.  It dries within about 30 seconds after you apply it, so you have to work fast otherwise you end up with a creased effect.  It is important to blend it right away once you put it on your eyelid before it dries, if you don’t blend it in time when you apply your eyeshadow you are then left with uneven pigment, and you can visibly see where you didn’t blend it in correctly- it almost looks like small patches.

Tip: For those of you who don’t have an eyeshadow primer, or if you are ever in a pinch and run out of product, you can always use concealer on your eyelids as well.  This creates a great base and works well as a dupe or alternative to an eyeshadow primer.

I love the formula of this product because it is super easy to blend in.  Other eyeshadow primers I have tried work great, but when applying it on the eyelid you really have to tug at the skin to get it to blend.  As per one of my last blog posts, I mentioned how I really make a conscious effort to choose wisely when it comes to the products I put on my skin as well as how our skin ages.  With that being said, I don’t like to use products that require a ton of tugging or harsh blending in order to get the desired look.  This is just unnecessary “wear and tear” on your skin and I don’t want to be giving myself any extra wrinkles.  I know this may sound vain, but in the end I really value taking care of my skin.  I also follow a strict cleansing routine, so why not apply that same care to the products I use on my face and the way I apply them?

I give this product a 10 out of 10.  My eyeshadow stays put all day long, I never get creasing whatsoever.  Sometimes I have my eyeshadow on for 8 hours or 10-12 hours and still no creasing- it works SO well!  Have you tried any of the Urban Decay eyeshadow primers?  If so, what do you think of them?

Maison Jacynthe- Eyeshadow and Lipstick Review

Looking for a new eyeshadow or lipstick? Maison Jacynthe is the answer!  If you know me, you know I am all about eyeshadow.  I wear it every time I do my makeup, and I’m always looking for new colours to pair together and different finishes.  Maison Jacynthe sent me two eyeshadows and a lipstick to review, and I have found 3 new pieces to add to my “staples” collection.

Maison Jacynthe is a Canadian brand, products are made in Québec- YAY!  I love this quote from their brochure “Our 100% natural and active products are real food for the skin.”  You can use their products with confidence, knowing you are treating your skin to natural ingredients, not chemicals.

What you WON’T find in Maison Jacynthe products:

  • No petroleum byproducts
  • No artificial fragrances
  • No artificial preservatives

Maison Jacynthe’s active ingredients and fragrances come from plants and flowers.  I absolutely love this!

Here are some shots of the individual products I received:

Eyeshadow- 02 Crema:

Here is a closer look:

Crema is a beautiful shade.  I would say it is a bit of a cross between a frost and a lustre finish.  I use it as a highlight on the inner corner of the eyes, brow bone, or the entire mobile lid.  It is very rare for me to use a frost or lustre finish eyeshadow on my mobile lid, I love matte shades.  I usually only use the frost or lustre as a highlight shade on the eye.

Due to the fact that I have hooded lids, putting a finish like this all over the mobile lid or crease, usually ends up resulting in my eyes looking even more hooded.  When you apply these finishes to a hooded eye it captures the light (which brings things forward) and emphasizes the hood on the eye, making it look more severe than it actually is.  However, with this Maison Jacynthe eyeshadow I do not have this problem.  I actually love it all over the mobile lid, it is soft enough to not make the hooded lid stand out.  So to all my fellow hooded-eye beauties who are looking to add some sparkle to their collection- this is a must  if you normally tend to stay away from frost or lustre finishes for the same reasons I do- you will love this one!!

Eyeshadow- 09 Affogato:

Here is a closer look:

Affogato is AMAZING.  I can remember when I was 18 and going to prom, my Mom did my makeup for me.  She used this gorgeous purple/grey Revlon shade on my eyes and I was absolutely in love with it.  When I went to repurchase it after I ran out of it, I was disappointed to discover they discontinued the shade.  Affogato is almost exactly the same shade as that Revlon eyeshadow I was so sad to not be able to repurchase.  Maison Jacynthe’s shade is a gorgeous charcoal grey with a slight purple undertone.  If you have hazel eyes like me, or green eyes, it really makes them pop.  I love to use this shade in the crease.

I love to pair both these eyeshadows together.  Using Crema on my mobile lid, Affogato in the crease, and a bit of black eyeshadow on the outter V and lashline, and finish with some black mascara.  Both eyeshadows retail for C$22.00 each.

Moving on to lips, Maison Jacynthe also sent me this gorgeous lipstick.

Lipstick- 08 Corail Transparent Mate:

Corail Transparent Mate is so pretty.  It is matte, and goes on very easily- a little goes a long way.  I really like it because it is a beautiful coral shade, however, it is almost a cross between coral and red, and so it pairs well with a lot of different eyeshadow colour looks.  This lipstick goes on matte, but my favourite thing about it is that it is NOT drying.  Often times matte lipsticks can leave your lips feeling dry, but Maison Jacynthe’s almost has a creamy texture to it, so it’s easy to work with.  I also love the packaging of this product, how cute!!  It retails for C$33.00.

Tip: When using a matte lipstick such as this one, I suggest making sure you exfoliate your lips before application.  The only downfall to matte lipstick shades in my opinion is it really emphasizes dead skin if your lips are chapped.  I use a lip exfoliator before applying this and it goes on really well.

Overall Maison Jacynthe has a phenomenal makeup line.  I am so impressed at how pigmented the eyeshadows and lipstick are, a little of these products go a long way.  For a brand that has no chemicals and is made with natural ingredients, the makeup measures up to other high-end brands products that I use.  If you are looking for a birthday gift for someone, or still doing your holiday shopping, I strongly suggest checking out Maison Jacynthe!

Here are some swatches of all 3 products:

Bobbi Brown- Eye Shadow, Blush and Eye Brush Review

This week I am talking about Bobbi Brown again.  YES- another Bobbi Brown review, because her products are THAT awesome.  I will forever be in love!!

If you missed my last post on Bobbi Brown you can view it here, I reviewed a bronzer and highlighter pencil! I also spoke about Bobbi Brown and my love for her line in my guest appearance last week on Cat Forsley‘s beauty podcast MyLipAddiction, you can listen to it on iTunes and other channels, click here for my post with the links.

This review will be on a blush, eye shadow and an eye blending brush.

I said it in my last review and I can’t say it enough.  What I love most about her products is how blendable they are.  It’s amazing.  Whether you are a beginner in makeup or experienced, they are very easy products to work with.  The other great thing is the colour payoff.  When I use this eyeshadow and blush, I barely have to put any on my brush, a little goes a very long way.  Which is a win because your product lasts longer!

Here are some individual shots of each:

Eye Shadow in shade 13 Cocoa.  I love how this shadow really warms up the crease.  It really brings out the green in my eyes too.  I purchased this for C$29.00, you can view it here.

Blush in shade 11 Nectar.  This is SO beautiful and natural looking, I love how Nectar creates the perfect natural blushing shade.  I purchased this for C$33.00, you can view it here.

I also have a lot of favourite makeup brushes as we all do (stay tuned for a post on this soon!) but I am really loving this brush, and I am so impressed with it so I am going to post about it today and in my favourite brushes post coming soon.  It has gone straight up to the top of my favourites list!  Here is a closer look at it:

This is her eye brush called Eye Blender.  I love using this when I am done applying all of my eye shadow for an overall blend to bring all of the shadows together.  You don’t have to put a lot of pressure to get the blended effect.  I love how soft it is, and how it does NOT tug at the skin on my eye at all.  I purchased this for C$40.00, you can view it here.

I give all 3 of these a 10/10.  I am never let down by Bobbi Brown products, and I love the company philosophies, which I spoke about in my last post as well.  I highly recommend all of the products of hers I have mentioned on my blog!  I think my cat Abby does as well, because she couldn’t keep her paws off of it while I was trying to take photos hehe!

These girls are absolutely so sweet.  I am so thankful to have met them all thanks to Dave Lackie and beauty blogging.  From left to right: Christine, myself, Nicci and Cat.

This taping was on a Friday so we got to see a Fashion Friday segment live with Lynn Spence!!! Here are a few photos of some of my favourite outfits shown:

We also had the treat of seeing Dave’s beauty and fragrance segments!  He and Tracy Moore the host of the show are soo funny together!

The amount of work the crew puts in is unbelievable.  When you watch the show you really don’t know what goes on behind the scenes, and the amount of team work and dedication it takes to make everything happen.  Absolutely phenomenal people, they were all very sweet and great at explaining how things work.

I also got to see the control/production room, this was so cool!

This is where the director calls the shots, and the videos and content used in the show gets uploaded (to name a few).  Lots of team work happening in this room!

After the show I went down to take some photos of the set up close.  It is so lovely, I love the vibe they have going on.  So pretty, fresh and modern.

The official Cityline set doors:

The different sections of the set:

I also had my photo taken with Lynn Spence and Candy Signorini, they were both SO funny and great to chat with:

Thank you SO MUCH to Dave and everyone at Cityline for having us.  You treated us to an amazing experience, and showed us a side of broadcast that not many people get to see unless they work in the industry.  The crew really is like a family there, and it is inspiring to see a group of individuals come together, work hard and produce something so many people love like Cityline.

Here is a photo of the extremely generous gift bag we received.  Will be doing some individual posts on some of these products:

I also did a short question interview with Dave on his role with Cityline, and the beauty industry in general.  I wanted to include it in this post, but it would be too long, and I also really think it deserves its own feature/post.  I will instead include it as a separate piece, so stay tuned on my blog this week for that- you won’t want to miss this!  Those of you that already know Dave as well know how kind he is, and I am so grateful he took the time to answer some questions I asked him, and that I can share this with all of you.  I cannot wait for you to see that post this week!

The taping we attended will be airing on Friday, September 9th on CityTV.  If you missed the fun, you can see it all under the hashtag #citylinebeauty.

Kat Von D- Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette Review

I am so excited to be writing this review on the Shade + Light Eye Contour Palette by Kat Von D.  This palette was created with Kat’s profession in mind, the packaging states “An expert sketch artist, Kat uses shadow and light to create dimension in her extraordinary portraits” following this with saying that this palette can be used to “create your ideal eye shape- for the ultimate definition, lift, or balance.”  I apologize if some of the photos show some wear and tear on the palette, but I have been using it daily since the day I purchased it 5 months ago.
